Toshiba Corporation is the largest semiconductor manufacturer in Japan and the second largest comprehensive motor manufacturer, under the Mitsui Group. The company was founded in July 1875, originally named Tokyo Shizuura Electric Co., Ltd. It was formed in 1939 by the merger of Tokyo Electric Co., Ltd. and Shizuura Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Its business areas include digital products, electronic components, social infrastructure equipment, home appliances, etc. Since the 1980s, Toshiba has transformed from a company mainly focused on household appliances and heavy-duty motors to a comprehensive electronic appliance enterprise that includes communication and electronics.
